WWOZ Piano Night, April 29Piano Night, our flagship benefit, happens on April 29, the Monday night between Jazz Fest weekends. In addition to its usual stellar lineup showcasing the New Orleans Piano Tradition (Ellis Marsalis, Marcia Ball, Jon Cleary, Joe Krown, Tom McDermott, Craig Adams, Josh Paxton and more), Piano Night 2019 has a new feature: "The Byrd's Nest Lounge Patron Party," an intimate showcase in the House of Blues Foundation Room, named after the inspiration for the very first Piano Night: Professor Longhair, AKA Mr. Henry Byrd. |

Volunteer Profile: Jerry Lenaz"WWOZ keeps me connected to New Orleans culture and music" says longtime volunteer Jerry Lenaz. "OZ staff and volunteers feel like extended family…. I feel happy to spread the joy of New Orleans." Originally from Princeton, New Jersey, Jerry has produced the Friday Livewire since 2003. He first discovered the station when he was a graduate student of Tulane University’s A. B. Freeman School of Business in 1996. Jerry was part of the consulting club that provided ideas and advice to WWOZ’s young Mango Freeze venture. Thank you, Jerry, for your steady commitment to WWOZ! |

Show Host Profile: Peggy LouWe asked Peggy Lou, host of "Awake and Willing" on Saturdays from 10pm to midnight, how she manages to deliver such a clever, seamless flow of themes and music throughout her two-hour program. She replied candidly "That’s the only way I know how to do it!" Peggy Lou joined WWOZ in 2000 when the station was in Armstrong Park. She had been a host on KVMR in Nevada City, California for 15 years before moving to New Orleans. Peggy Lou says that being a DJ is perfect for someone who is connected to music, but "too lazy to become a musician." We can’t imagine Saturday nights on WWOZ without her familiar voice thanking her listeners: "I wouldn’t be here if you didn’t turn me on!" |

Brass Pass Pickup InformationIf you bought a Brass Pass for Jazz Fest 2019 (thanks much!), you can pick it up according to the instructions at the link below. Also, note that we will not be doing pick up at the station this year; instead, the last distributions before Jazz Fest will be held at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation on North Rampart, a much more accessible location. |

Recipe: Dirty, Dirty RiceWhere rice is concerned, as with riffs, dirty is good! Dirty rice, a kind of proto-jambalaya, is staple of many varieties of Southern cooking, including Creole and, of course, Cajun. |
