YOSHI'S: I've been out on the West Coast catching some fantastic music. On the Jazz side, the highlight has to be Yoshi's in San Francisco on Fillmore. Charlie Haden (legendary bassist and composer) got together with Ernie Watts on sax, Alan Broadbent on piano and Rodney Green on drums to showcase a phenomenal array of tunes, from "Child's Play" (Haden) to "Lovely Woman" (Ornette Coleman) to "Blue and Green" (Bill Evans). What was also special was that both shows were packed and there were tons of young hipsters enjoying straight up jazz. RUSSIAN RIVER JAZZ AND BLUES FESTIVAL: In the heart of wine and redwood country (West Sonoma County), there is an annual festival on the river featuring outstanding performers from around the country. Last Saturday Al Jarreau and others were solid and the sun and river came together to make for an idyllic afternoon. On Sunday, despite rain and wind, the crowds hung tough and caught Tommy Castro, Bernard Allison, Rick Estrin and Janiva Magness in a "Legendary R&B Review". They cooked. But the best was yet to come: Dr. John and then the Neville Brothers literally shook the trees and the stratosphere with their New Orleans sounds. We have fans all over the world, but I am constantly amazed at how many of them have truly fallen in love with our musicians and our music. The plan, hit the Coast again next year for more of the same.
