'OZone Newsletter

Dear Listener,

The common wisdom is that New Orleans goes into a deep sleep once summer sets in. But you wouldn’t know it if you had been down on Frenchman Street on a regular old Saturday night in July, smack dab in the middle of our presumed estivation!

From one end of the street to the other the music was spilling out of its many lairs—the Pinettes Brass Band, the Palmetto Bug Stompers, Joe Krown with Walter “Wolfman” Washington and Russell Batiste, Cindy Scott, John Boutte, Alex McMurray, Panorama Jazz Band, Meschiya Lake and the Little Big Horns, the Frenchmen Street Jug Band, St. Louis Slim, Ken Swartz Trio, the Ramblin' Letters, the Rap Pack, Kelcy Mae, the Dirty Bourbon River Show, and Davell Crawford all playing simultaneously. Not to mention all the great music ‘round the corner, up the street and across town.

If this is how New Orleans slumbers through the summer, how will we manage what fall will bring?

In the meantime, be sure not to miss any of the action. The most complete and up-to-date tip sheet on our local music scene is to be found on our Livewire Music Listings online. It's also read at the top of each odd hour on 90.7 FM locally, or via our web stream. And if you can’t get out every night of the week for some live, local music, we here at 'OZ frequently bring it right to your home with our special live club broadcasts.

It just so happens we’ve got one coming up—WWOZ’s own show host Marc Stone will be playing with his band and the Hell Bent Horns with Kirk Joseph and Amanda Walker on Thursday, July 21 at 8 PM, live from the Carrollton Station. It may be summertime, but it’s New Orleans. It’s WWOZ. It’s why we always say: Too much ain’t enough!

Yours in downpours and cypress floors,

Happy 100th birthday, Lionel Ferbos

Lionel Ferbos at Satchmo SummerFest 2010.

Picking up a cornet the same year Miles Davis was born, Lionel Ferbos still has a paying gig every Saturday at The Palm Court Jazz Café, a gig to which he's never late. Last Sunday Lionel turned 100 and continues to be one of the oldest active musicians in the world. He came into the radio station on Wednesday to let us celebrate with him: check out our photos from his visit. And in recent years he's begun receiving birthday cards from all over the world; it's not too late to send him a card yourself.
