As we approach this season of celebration, let us pause in remembrance.
A couple weeks ago musicians including Dave Bartholomew, Dr. John, Jon Cleary, Deacon John and Wendell Brunious delivered a heart-rending series of performances and eulogies to a small cadre of family and friends at an interment memorial for drummer Bernard “Bunchy” Johnson, culminating in a second line led by the Treme Brass Band to St. Louis Cemetary No. 1.
The next Saturday, crowds filled the streets with photographs recalling the joyful memories of Herman Leonard, whose love affair with New Orleans was only surpassed by the reciprocal love that New Orleanians felt for him.
Now, we pay homage to Walter Payton, a musician and an educator. This past Saturday the folks whose lives were enriched by this endearing man came together in yet another second line celebrating his legacy. You definitely need to check out Eve Abrams' exceptional feature on Walter that is currently posted on our website.
The coda to this story begins with Glenn David Andrews at d.b.a. last Monday night, one of three second-generation trombonists on stage, including the very young son of Wes “Warm Daddy” Anderson. Earlier that day, the unstoppable Derek Tabb played in a showcase of his Roots of Music afterschool band and study hall program where he featured the next 400 young-lions-to-be.
As some of New Orleans’ most important creators pass from the scene, the emergence of so much young life within the tradition gives a whole new meaning to “call and response.”
Yours in second lines and past and future good times,
David Freedman
