Dear Listener,

I just renewed my membership online. I didn't intend to -- I usually wait for the Membership Drive, which is just around the corner (September 30 through October 7). I like to pledge when there's someone on air doing something uber-cool, whether it's a show host playing a song I've never heard before or a musician whipping up an unforgettable impromptu live performance. Somehow I always end up having a visceral response to the magical 'OZ moments that we've come to expect from our volunteer show hosts and our local musicians.

I was looking for inspiration to encourage listeners who haven't pledged to do so, so I went to What Does WWOZ Mean to You?. If you read what some of our listeners are saying about WWOZ, you'll see why I jumped the gun and pledged before the drive -- I just couldn't wait to say thank you.

Fall Membership Drive

WWOZ's membership drives are the best times to tune in to hear one-of-a-kind performances by New Orleans' brightest stars -- Irma Thomas (pictured) stopped by during our last drive -- who will be on hand to help us kick off our 30th anniversary! TwoDat: Cheer the Saints to a Repeat

The defending champion New Orleans Saints kicked off their season on September 9, so get in the black and gold spirit and start singing, chanting, and rapping along with these Saints fight songs from Shamarr Allen, Tambourine Green, and many more. And we know plenty of TwoDat tunes will pop up during the season, so keep your eyes and ears on our updated list.

Live Broadcast: John Mooney @ 12 Bar

On September 17, tune in to hear yet another amazing live broadcast on 'OZ. This smoke-free show features Louisiana bluesman John Mooney at the 12 Bar in downtown New Orleans. The performance and broadcast are sponsored by LetsBeTotallyClear.org to promote clean air for workers, musicians and audiences.

2010 Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival

A match made in heaven on October 16-17: New Orleans' Lafayette Square hosts a festival celebrating blues and barbeque. The annual Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival is brought to you by the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation, and WWOZ will broadcast live from the festival. Taj Mahal (pictured) is headlining this year; stay tuned to our live broadcast page to find out which acts you'll hear on 'OZ. Our Outreach Krewe will be there to raffle off 'OZ flags and sign up new members, plus there'll be plenty of 'OZ gear available for purchase.

NOJHF Community Partnership Grant Deadline: Sept. 20

The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation is accepting applications for 2010-2011 Community Partnership Grants in the category of "Jazz Journey Presenting: Festivals and Concerts in Music and Performing Arts." These grants provide support to nonprofit organizations that hire local musicians and other local performing artists for cultural events. The application deadline is Monday, September 20.

Where Y'Hat at the French Market

Join fellow hat enthusiasts at the 2nd Annual Where Y'Hat celebration in the French Market's Dutch Alley on September 24 from 5-8pm. The event includes a fashion show, crafts, raffles, and a hat contest, as well as live music from Jayna Morgan & the Sazerac Sunrise Jazz Band and the Lantana Combo. Don't forget to wear your best hat!

Show Host Spotlight: Yolanda Estrada

Yolanda Estrada has been on the air at 'OZ since 1989, hosting "Tiene Sabor" ("It has soul") currently on Saturday afternoons. The Honduran native moved to New Orleans in 1962, and she co-owns Musica Latina, a CD shop uptown, with her husband. Read Bill Berry's insightful interview with Yolanda to learn more about her.

September Recipe: Louisiana Buffalo Shrimp

This month's recipe comes from Chef Brent Applewhite of Refuel Café in New Orleans. The savory concoction calls for Louisiana's famous shrimp, breaded and fried with a hot sauce reduction and topped with bleu cheese.
