'OZone Email Newsletter for July, 2009

'OZone Newsletter

Dear Listener,

As we head into hurricane season, the spectre of a "weather event" clings like the sticky, humid New Orleans air to the skin. Now's the time to reflect on storms we have weathered this past year, and to ponderate on what lies in store.

The post-Katrina support we received was extremely generous and got us back on our feet. Now, with the stormy economic climate and the disappearance of Louisiana's annual operating grant for public broadcasters into the Bermuda Triangle, we need our wild 'OZillians to help us carry on once again.

One thing is absolutely clear: No matter what, we'll continue to build out our services and provide the best damn programming we know how — with programs like New Orleans All the Way Live and our 'OZ Vibes live broadcast series. How could we do otherwise?

Yours in funky cabs and soft shell crabs,

Satchmo SummerFest Turns 9!

Satchmo

The ninth annual Satchmo SummerFest blows into New Orleans July 30 to August 2. This musical tribute to the favorite son of the Crescent City, Louis Armstrong, kicks off with an art show and swings along with a "club strut" at various venues along Frenchmen Street. The festival culminates in a 2-day free outdoor music blowout around the old U.S. Mint in the French Quarter, featuring many of New Orleans' finest bands. What better way to beat the heat than music in the streets!

Helping Hands for the Mother In Law

Antoinette and Ernie K-Doe

Ernie K-Doe opened the Mother-In-Law Lounge in 1994 as a place for musicians to gather and play the music that makes New Orleans great. His widow, Miss Antoinette, kept the club going until her own passing on Mardi Gras day 2009. Since then, the Lounge has been on hiatus, but Betty Fox (Antoinette's daughter) recently re-opened this cultural treasure to the public, and she's holding a fundraiser on July 26. To pull it off, she needs the help of a few handy volunteers. Don't be shy! Stop by or give her a call, and tell her WWOZ sent ya.

Celtic Music Host Wins Irish Award

Photo of Sean O'Meara

For the past 12 years, Sean O'Meara has been the voice of Celtic music on WWOZ's Music from the Glen show. On June 27, the New Basin Canal branch of the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann (the international society for the preservation of Irish culture) honored O'Meara with an appreciation award at the Deutsches Haus in New Orleans. Our hearty congratulations go out to Sean, who continues the award-winning tradition of his predecessor on the show, Richie Stafford.

Recipe: Peach Melba from Antoine's

Photo of food

Peach Melba made its debut in 1892 at a party thrown by the Duke of Orleans in honor of Australian opera singer Nellie Melba. Since then, the recipe has been modified in dozens of ways. Here's a classy take on this French classic, courtesy of Antoine's Restaurant in New Orleans. If you like the recipe, then check out Louisiana Cookin' magazine. Subscribe with the promotion code wwoz09, and they'll donate $5 to WWOZ.
