Volunteer Spotlight: Arlene HinesArlene Hines’ daughter Babbette and son-in-law Carlos introduced her to WWOZ online long before she moved to the Crescent City from her hometown of Cincinnati, Ohio. "I love the music, the people, the acceptance!" says Arlene. She found her niche at WWOZ over five years ago and keeps a regular schedule at the station as an off-air volunteer. Last month Arlene contributed 330 hours to operations support and we thank her for all she does! We need volunteers for our Fall Membership Drive, October 17-24! Contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Maryse Dejean. |

Show Host Spotlight: Murf ReevesMurf Reeves, host of Monday’s New Orleans Music Show from 11am to 2pm, refers to himself as a "music dork". In addition to music, he has a keen interest in literature and food. He is a chef, a bartender and former drummer. Murf started volunteering at WWOZ in 2001—the second day after he moved to New Orleans! He took a break and came back in 2008. Murf has been listening to music ever since his high school years in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, so becoming a show host fits right in with his desire to share the good grooves he discovers. |

Free Music Education Programs from the NOJ&HFOn Saturday, September 9, the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation will host auditions for new students interested in joining its free program, the Don "Moose" Jamison Heritage School of Music. The same day, prospective students will be interviewed for a new free program for first-time music learners, HSM Beginners. |

Baby's Coffee Shout OutThe ebullient Gary Teplitsky and his serene wife Olga Manosalvas of Baby’s Coffee stopped by the station on the first day of Satchmo Fest. They’ve been blending coffee since 1991 and have kept WWOZ caffeinated for over a decade now. The couple had a real estate and restoration business before they fell in love with Key West during one of their trips through Florida. They realized that moving there called for a new line of work so they took stock of their skills. Gary was good at fixing barbecue and he liked coffee. Olga flipped a quarter, heads for barbecue and tails for coffee, and then she told Gary "You're roasting coffee!" Thanks for your longtime support, Gary and Olga! |

Recipe: New Orleans-Style Cold Brew Ice CoffeeSpeaking of coffee.... Cold brew coffee has never been more popular. Lots of people are discovering something New Orleanians have known for a long time: cold brew makes the best ice coffee. It's dead simple (and just a little bit messy) to make your own cold brewed coffee. |
