The Congo Square New World Rhythms Festival celebrates the rich cultural heritage of Louisiana, showcasing the African, the Caribbean and Latin American traditions that combined in the Crescent City to make New Orleans a nexus of world culture.
With two stages of music and dance, plus a huge arts market, a fresh foods market, prepared food vendors and beverages and a social services community center, the Congo Square New World Rhythms Festival is more than just an event. It's a true community celebration.
Tom Dent Congo Square Symposium - Live Video Stream
WWOZ will host a live video stream of the Tom Dent Congo Square Symposium on Saturday March 24 from 10am to 1pm. This year's Syposium features renowned local and national scholars and tradition bearers including Robert Farris Thompson, William Ferris, Freddie Evans, Tito Sompas, Joyce Marie Jackson, Shannon Powell and Felice Guimont.
WWOZ will be hosting the live video stream of the Symposium.
Jazz Journey Dance Concert
On Saturday March 24 in the evening the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation present a dance concert at Tulane's Dixon Hall with Tito Sompa, Aussettua Amor Amenkum, Kumbuka African Dance Collective, N'Kafu Traditional African Dance Company, Tekrema Dance Theatre and Casa Samba.
Class Got Brass? School Brass Band Competition
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation is hosting a brass band competition for Louisiana middle schools and high schools during the Congo Square Rhythms Festival. Over 20 schools will be competing with celebrities judges including Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews, Gregory Davis, Dr. Michael White, Sammie Williams, Shamarr Allen, Derrick Tabb, Virgil Tiller, Brice Miller and several others.
