Jimmy Glickman was a man renowned amongst New Orleans musicians for his support of the music community and generosity as owner of the New Orleans Music Exchange, New Orleans' only local one-stop-shop for everything music for more than 20 years. Glickman passed away on January 14, 2016 at the age of 52. On Saturday, February 20, Tipitina's is hosting a celebration of his life from 2-6p.
The event will feature performances by Ivan Neville, George Porter Jr., and Tony Hall, Walter “Wolfman” Washington & the Roadmasters, Johny Mooney & Marc Stone, Da Wright Way Brass Band, and Mem Shannon and the Membership. The Hot 8 Brass band, Young Pinstripe Brass Band, and Soul Brass Band will lead a second line that will end back at Tip's where the Landry-Walker High School Marching Band will then play.
Glickman frequently contributed to the Tipitina's Foundation's annual Instruments-A-Comin' benefit and supported many local non-profits, including the New Orleans Musicians Clinic. New Orleans musicians of all ages, walks of life, and levels of fame have stories of how he supported their craft. Glickman had strong personal relationships with many of his customers, anticipating their musical and, often, emotional needs. He regularly lent equipment to musicians in need and offered prices on surprisingly liberal sliding scale.
George Porter, Jr. shared the news of Glickman's passing on social media in January. “Once again New Orleans musician has lost a great friend and owner of New Orleans Music Exchange music store. The days of the little guy with a neighborhood music store is just about gone here in the city I think he was the only one. Rest well my friend.”
The Jazz and Heritage Foundation shared, “In addition to all he did for professional musicians, Jimmy helped education programs by sourcing discounted instruments for Tipitina's Foundation's Instruments A-Comin' and our own Class Got Brass. We all loved him.”
