WWOZ congratulates the New Orleans Jazz Orchestra, led by trumpeter Irvin Mayfield, on winning a Grammy Award for their CD 'Book One' in the Large Jazz Ensemble category! The group beat out some impressive nominees, including: 'Legendary,' by Bob Florence Limited Edition, 'Eternal Interlude,' by the John Hollenbeck Large Ensemble, 'Fun Time,' by Sammy Nestico And The SWR Big Band, and 'Lab 2009,' by the University Of North Texas One O'Clock Lab Band.
Go congratulate them yourselves at one of their many shows around town, including their weekly Wednesday night jam at Irvin Mayfield's Jazz Playhouse.
Another 'OZ favorite, trumpeter/composer Terence Blanchard, picked up another Grammy for the Best Improvised Solo. The performance in question is on the track "Dancin' 4 Chicken" on Jeff 'Tain' Watts' album "Watts". Terence was recently featured in a smoke-free live broadcast with the Thelonious Monk Institute Jazz Ensemble at Snug Harbor.
Finally, Buckwheat Zydeco took the top honors at the Grammys in the Cajun/Zydeco category for his album "Lay Your Burden Down", which also featured guitarist Sonny Landreth, Trombone Shorty, and Warren Haynes.
WWOZ salutes these Grammy-winning local artists, and we look forward to more great music from all of them!
