Remembering Katrina: 5 Years After the Storm

Published on: August 17th, 2010

August 29, 2010, marks the five-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina making landfall as a Category 5 storm in southeast Louisiana. In the months following the failure of the federal levee system in New Orleans, a group of 31 community radio stations from around the world lent a much-needed hand as WWOZ struggled to stay on the air.

WWOZ salutes this group of stations — now affectionately called the Katrina Network — for embodying the true spirit of community radio, as well as the notion of Guarding the Groove. The Katrina Network is commemorated on the back of the WWOZ Live Broadcast Truck (pictured) as a testament to the power of community radio stations working together.

Five years ago I gave everything I owned away to get to New Orleans, Ray Ray say,"WE NEED ALL THE HELP WE CAN GET!" It was a long trip on the Hound from Portland, Oregon. I arrived a few days befor Christmas and slept in the park until I found a place in the Broadmoor area, there was nomore than five people in that area at the time. I was the only one with utilites for several weeks, hell it was so bad that I could not get a cab to come to my house, but someone from the ASPCA came by every two weeks to drop off pet food so thatI could take care of the dogs and cats in the hood. I moved to Camp St just after the Colisum Theater burned down. This is when I started to help others to repair and repaint their homes. As the economy went to hell it became harder for me to keep up with the over inflated cost of rent in the Garden D. I had to go, now I am in exile from a city that I gave every thing away to get to. I not angry or mad, I'm just sad that I had to move to Florida and stay with friends. Had BP hired more people from the New Orleans Area I Would not be in exile today and I would be a resident in the GREATEST CITY IN THE WORLD.La Bon temps Rouler.

Katrina made landfall as a Category 3, not 5.
